You know who David Koma is, right? That's him, above. He is the just graduated from the Saint Martin’s MA designer dude who in the space of a week had not only the most powerful female musician in the world wear one his dresses, but this followed the “nation’s sweetheart” Cheryl Cole (currently the most famous woman in Britain) also wearing one of this dresses. One wore it well (Beyonce, shown wearing it, top), the other did not (mainly because the metalwork on it weighed the dress down).
ANYWAY. Look, this isn’t why I am writing. All the stuff about David being the Next Big Thing has been said. But, still, he and I were chewing the fat the other day, talking about what it feels like to suddenly be pushed into the limelight when it is something you have wanted for ages. His reaction: “Of course it feels amazing, but the stress!!!"
David, who is 24 and was raised in St Petersburg, told me he was too nervous to actually watch the MTV music awards and celebrate seeing his dress being beamed to an audience of millions. That he went out with his friend and waited for a call to say Yay or Nay. It was too much. He also told me Beyonce’s people found the dress in the September issue of V magazine, modelled by Lady Gaga. It’s gratifying to learn that Beyonce is just like us pointing to a dress in a magazine and saying “Want that one...”
What surprised me most, and it has to be said what Koma also found incredible - having not actually met the Diva in person - is her dress size. Beyonce, the bootylicious, super-curvaceous woman who made many grown men (and many grown women, me included) lose sixty seconds of their lives each time they watched her bogleing in the Single Ladies video, is a UK dress size 6 to 8. Yep. She is tiny. “It’s incredible but true,” says David. "I sent a size 6-8 dress. A model size."
With David Koma what we have seen is just the beginning of what will hopefully become a body of work that will make him a designer to take seriously. “I want to show people there is more to me,” he told me. “I am not about dressing celebrities; I am about dressing strong inspirational women, that is my focus. I want to show good fashion season after season. I want to build a solid background.”
Well, David, you’ve got our attention now. But on the Beyonce front, a few hours after hearing this factoid on her dress size, I am still finding it hard to believe.
Why is this I wonder? I think its because I thought Beyonce was a size 10-12. And that she repped the more curvy women out there.
On reflection I feel both slightly let down by this, and rather inspired. Let down becasue Beyonce is the same dress size as all the "skinnies" despite her curves. Inspired becasue you can look curvaceous and strong, no matter what size you are. What do you think?

Maybe David sent a dress made out of some serious, industrial-grade stretchy fabric? Isn't UK6-8 = US2-4?
People often call me rail thin but I'm size UK8-10. I find it shocking that I'm bigger than Beyonce!

ReplyDeleteMuch debate raging this afternoon. The TopShop people say Beyonce buys size 10 from them. And we all know TopShop comes up small. So Bryanboy I think you might find you and Beyonce could share dresses after all. She is about 5"5 I think, and I bet you are at least six foot??

I highly doubt beyonce is that tiny. I have a 44in hips and 28in waist (size 8-10 waist) and have to buy jeans that are size 12 LONG just to get it over my behind and hips, despite jeans being too big around my waist! i'm only 5' 6''.

i think she is pretty thick and that's a god damn lie ! so when she lost the weight for dream girls what was she a 2-4 like miranda kerr? common ! i think us normal people can't even imagine the amount of lies we are being fed ! i'm a usa 14 right now and i look good :D it'a all about liking yourself !

There's no way Beyonce is that size. I'm a size 10, and I don't look bigger than Beyonce, allbeit less toned. She lost loads of weight for dream girls and got down to an US size 2-4, which is a british 6-8. She is in no way now as little as she was then.. :/

ReplyDeleteI don't believe she is a size 6 to 8, however it does say that her UK dress size is 6 to 8. in America, she'd be AT LEAST a size 10 or 12. And by the way, she is pear shaped not an hourglass, her hips are way bigger than her bustline.
ReplyDeleteA US 10 OR 12? You guys are tripping. lol I have the same body type as Beyonce and we carry our weight the same as well. I'm 5"6 and I wear a size 8. I believe she wears between a US size 6 and 8 most of the time. When she gets a little heavier, then a 10 is possible, but a 12?...Never.

My girlfriend weighs in at 57kg is solid, curvy with 32e chest, 5,6" and is a size 6. It's down to constitution and ratio between joints and muscle bellys. You can look thin in the conventional sense for having a more straight build but may be thicker round the joints and have a soft layer throughout the body with not especially low body fat, it's all perception. When Jodie marsh did her bodybuilding show everyone thought she was built like a tank, she was tiny and just ripped, not pleasant but ripped. When I met Alesha Dixon I thought she was going to be a little bigger for a celeb, she's tiny! You'd be surprised when you see some people in the flesh as to their size....

ReplyDeleteI've seen her in jeans and flats in person and didn't really even know it was her until told so. There is absolutely no way her dress size is that small.
She may have ordered that size but altered it later on to suit her, but then again if she is 5'5 , with curvy proportions she will look bigger than she really is....if she was a 5'7 or taller she would look as skinny as those models...

ReplyDeleteAnyone with common sense could look at Bey and tell she was not a damn 10 - 12. She's curvy, but she's not plus size - two degit size. I'm a size 12 and I LOVE beyonce's figure, but I know she wasn't my size. THINK ABOUT IT. she's a professional dancer, she does cardo non stop! and she weight trains.
My point is don't knock her for not being 10-12 when the standard of hollywood is a 0 - 2. she's still representing Curvy women. It's not about trying to be her size. it's about being whatever size, shape makes you feel your most healthy (first and foremost) and most beautiful and allowing other people to be their own size too!
Let's not forget she's 5'3. She's not tall. Plus, she looks normal and healthy. Isn't that what really matters? Who cares what the label of her clothing says?
