GOLDEN GLOBES 2011: THE FASHION LOWDOWN

Posted by Fashion Editor at Large

I woke up at 6.30am wondering who wore what to the Golden Globes. This has a lot to do with the fact that I laid down a few informal bets with my friend Brix Smith-Start last night just before I went to bed and she went off to do all night coverage for Sky 1. I said "long", "Jil Sander". "bright colour" and "Marchesa." Brix was betting on colour, sparkle and oodles of Marchesa.

Marchesa did figure strongly. However only one of the dresses is featured here (on Sandra Bullock) because the rest are too overblown. My choices below represent where I think fashion is going in silhouette, colour and mood and two looks of where it has definitely been and  now gone.

The fashion mood has shifted from sexy to super-long and modestly covered up from neck to toe to wrists. The look is austere and more Miss Haversham than Jessica Rabbit. I love it, it feels so right for now.

Thank you to the Daily Telegraph Golden Globes Hits & Misses pages this morning where I picked up these images. Disclaimer: I have made my own choices - hence what may be a MISS for the Telegraph is a HIT for me!

The peachy colour of her dress worn next to her tawny skin and blonde hair is just lovely. The silhouette is divine. Minimalist long, by Calvin Klein of course. My favourite fashion package of the evening.

The Telegraph don't like this. I LOVE IT. Fringed red Versace on January Jones (who is the face of the brand for SS11) is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

If I had been invited to the Globes, I would have worn this Marchesa dress, that is if Sandra would let me.

Angelina looks fabulous for a change in crystal encrusted emerald green full length gown by Atelier Versace. Forest green will be a really strong colour for spring 2011.

Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive, the haute couture side of Armani's business. It perfectly treads the line between elegant and glamorous.

Scarlett Johannsson in fairytale Elie Saab

Tilda in Jil Sander skirt from SS11 collection and white shirt. She looks like a Miss Haversham for 2011.

Clare Danes in Calvin Klein

Leighton Meester in Burberry Prorsum pre-fall for 2011, with a Louis Vuitton SS11 bag. This is a young, cute way to wear long. The split in the dress gives it elegant sass, and the cute puff sleeves give the whole look a youthful innocence.

FASHION NO-NO'S NOW

Nicole Kidman shows how out-of-fashion the one shoulder dress looks these days.

Megan Fox demonstrates how the super-tight "sexy" dress has totally lost its fashion mojo. At long last, I say.

Maximalist GENIUS! The dress is by Dame Vivienne Westwood. Who else?

  1. It was great to see Ange in colour, and I loved seeing so many long sleeves. Scarlet had the best entire look I think, her hair worked with the dress perfectly. Also loved Julianne Moore in Lanvin, but the creases on the front were terrible! So glad you gave HBC a mention, she is a national treasure :)

  2. Can't we call that "emerald green?" I think of "forest green" as darker, less vibrant than the color of Angie's dress.

  5. Anne Hathaway was my fave. And Helena Bonham-Carter always brings a smile to my face.

  6. It's a real shame January Jones' dress was slated, I love it. Fingers crossed we'll be seeing red and green mismatched shoes as an AW11 catwalk trend...
