WHEN I MET MY MIRROR AT GIVENCHY

It is not often that I will post photographs of myself on this blog but I was going through my shots from Paris and there was this crazy one of me and my old friend Vanessa Coyle of Harpers Bazaar. It was taken straight after the Givenchy show, and Vanessa and I were thinking along the same lines with our look of the day, don't you think?  The jacket is - surprise, surprise! - by Celine.

Celine was by far the most popular label amongst fashion editors in Paris, and spotting it became something of a sport for myself and yet another British journalist who has this jacket, Fran Burns from Love magazine. It is unfortunate that Frannie wasn't wearing her jacket at the Givenchy show - that would have been a great picture!

That wasn't the end of the Celine-athon. This evening Sarah Mower and myself attended the press event for the Central Saint Martin's MA graduate show. Sarah was wearing the very beautiful Celine coat in camel; she also has it in black. The coat has a very particular look which Ms Philo described to Alice Rawsthorn for the New York Times last month: “It’s cut very specifically like a double-breasted coat, but worn open like a single-breasted coat,” she explains. “The cut of the shoulder and sleeves is twisted at the front, so you get this feeling that it’s sitting on your shoulders.”

Like me, Sarah is not alone amongst her colleagues in ownership of the same item. She tells me Brana Wolf, [Harpers Bazaar USA], Aliona Doletskaya [editor-in-chief Russian Vogue] and Alex White [W Magazine] and Phoebe Philo regularly wear theirs.
Sarah Mower looking fabulous in one of her TWO!! Celine coats. She also has it in black.

Over the course of Paris Fashion Week, Fran Burns said she counted 17 individual women wearing the below jacket - both this length and the shorter waist-length version. I'm torn between being glad I don't have one, to jealous of those who do.

On another note the caramel and nude pink colour vibe ushered in this season by labels such as Celine, Stella and Chloe - to my eyes the three most influential labels for AW10 - have inspired the beginnings of my proper Spring wardrobe, which I will explore and share through this blog as it happens. Hence why, during my lunch hour from Grazia HQ today I bought this silky nude-coloured shirt from Zara for £49.99. The girl in who served me said they came in-store today. I love it! What do you think?

Excuse the pose, I was camping it up for my friend Angela Buttolph, Grazia's web editor.

  1. It's like a Grazia Who Wore It Best? feature!

FYI, I think you did.. super-cool flats (Yohji?), and your whole look seems more in keeping with the Celine vibe somehow.. it is a beautiful jacket.

  2. Thankyou! It's funny isn't it? So glad I found the shot - it sums up the Celine fandom in Paree.

The flats are from the new range by Nicholas Kirkwood; he is a British shoe designer and very talented.

  4. Adore the Khaki jacket but I may have to make do with one from M&S, sadly.

  6. Would you really class Chloé and Stella McCartney as the other two in a triumvirate of the important labels right now? Ahead of Marc Jacobs? Balenciaga? Yves Saint Laurent? Prada? I think not. It must be galling to Stella that her ex-assistant ex-friend is so astoundingly influential (I am amazed at how influential Céline has proved to be this season). In fact, even more so that it forced McCartney to change her own ideas.

  8. Dear Anonymous,
You are right to nit-pick. I am not suggesting that Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and Prada are not top five. They are. YSL is another matter...

What I am trying to put across in the post is that Celine is ushering in a new way of dressing for younger women who are not already personally aligned to brand-thinking such as that put-out by Prada, Balenciga and Marc Jacobs. Certainly, I have NEVER in my fashion life so happily parted with £1200 for a designer item as when I did for that jacket. Same goes for my friends, acquaintances and colleagues. In addition I see very young women who shop in markets and on the high street emulating the Celine look. Have you seen Zara this week?

That is why Celine (and now Stella and Chloe for AW10) are highly influential now. I will clarify my sweeping statement in the post.

You admit you are surprised at the influence - well watch out. Their current aesthetic may well change the way a whole generation of fashion fans approach dressing next season. Although I am becoming more and more seduced by Marc Jacobs new silhouette.

Stella is cut from the same cloth (excuse the pun) as Phoebe and has not had the benefit of two years off while producing three children to Phoebe's two. It is obvious they are exploring the same territory, and it is clear Stella was snapped into shape after looking at Celine last season. And she didn't change her own ideas THAT much. Also, it does not mean she is any less talented than Phoebe.

I have spent the last week going through the shows and some of the world’s most "influential" designers have been influenced by Phoebe this season. I think it is more down to the luxury of time she has had to think and work, (and good on her for making that happen) versus the paucity of time busy working designers get to develop ideas. Pressure to produce can be a killer. Just look at McQueen.
    Thank-you for your comments,
